Year 3, #11
Thursday, 24 June 2004
Laweyan, Solo
Dear Friends,
Last night we had the last (11th) klenengan of the 3rd fiscal year of the North-American-sponsored klenengan. It started at 8:00 pm and ended at 2:00 am. It was one of the fullest ever, with only a very few musicians missing (Bp-s Pahang, Hali and Widodo were playing in a wayang at Bale Kambang, and Bu-s Tukinem and Tarini are still recovering from illnesses and unable to attend).
We had a special guest this month—Bp. Midiyanto from Eromoko, Wonogiri, who most of you know as a karawitan and pedhalangan teacher in the USA. He will be back in the USA as of late August, teaching at Berkeley. Mas Midi has spent the past 1-2 years here in Java building up a children’s group (7-12 year olds) in Eromoko that won first prize in a recent area-wide competition, directing other adult groups in Eromoko, and performing wayang. Mas Wakidi and I had the opportunity recently to hear the children’s group and they are terrific. The kendhang player—a 4th grader—played with such calm and confidence through a myriad of complicated transitions in the suites they do. He got a special thumbs up from mas Wakidi when we said goodbye. All the children, even the singers, had everything memorized and played with such artistry—we were very impressed!
In preparation for the 4th year of this very successful klenengan, the founding committee (Bp. Harjito, Bp. Wakidi, Barry Drummond, myself, Chris Miller, Marc Perlman, Anne Stebinger) composed a letter to all participants, which was handed out at the klenengan. This letter reiterates our intent/purpose, reviews how funds are used, and opens up for discussion some of the aspects of the klenengan that might want to be altered a bit.
At the klenengan last Thursday night, during dinner, Bp. Wakidi and myself gathered with interested musicians in one of the side rooms at Laweyan and had a discussion about the contents of the letter and ideas for future klenengan. Please see attachments if you’re interested in information on this meeting or on reading the letter we sent out translated into English.
In addition to this e-mail, you will also receive a letter about new subscriptions. We hope you continue to support this event. Thanks for your support so far!
