Year 3, #7
Saturday, 21 February 2004
Laweyan, Solo
Dear Friends,
Last night we had the 7th klenengan of the 3rd fiscal year of the North-American-sponsored klenengan. It started at 8:00 pm and ended at 1:30 (a little earlier than usual when Bp. Kuat unexpectedly went into ayak-ayakan about 1 gendhing early!). The night before was “malam 1 Sura”—the Javanese and Islamic New Year, when both Solo palaces air their “pusaka” (artifacts/heirlooms believed to be invested with a variety of powers) in night-time processionals. Malam 1 Sura is also a big night for wayangan, as people are encouraged to stay up all night. Therefore the klenengan was moved to Sunday night. Because the exact date of malam 1 Sura seemed to be under debate up to the last minute among palace musicians, the klenengan date was changed many times. For that reason I think, we had a smaller turnout than usual. However, there were a number of musicians (Wito, Dewi, Harjutri, Budi, Karman,Yatmi) following dhalang for Sura-related wayang.
Ibu Tukinem didn’t come, as she is still recovering from a serious sinus infection and operation. Mas Wakidi and I went to see her on Friday and she seems to be healing quickly, although she still has some pain and pressure at night. We passed on some funds we had leftover from Bp. Yadi’s collection, to help her family with the expenses.
Pak Wakidjo also did not come, as he has been sick for about 3 weeks with a chronic cough and shortness of breath. We went to see him yesterday, and he seems to be on the mend, but still short of breath. He said he didn’t want to be in a place where everyone was smoking. Bu Mulyani also didn’t come, as she was taking care of a very sick family member.

Budget
Even though it was a smaller crowd, it was an engaging klenengan with interesting pieces and people seemed to enjoy themselves as usual. We spent Rp.4,810,000 or $578 ($1 = Rp. 8318 at the banks).
