Year 3, #4

Laweyan, Solo

Dear Friends,

Last night we had the 4th klenengan of the 3rd fiscal year of our event. Most of the musicians were in attendance, but I do have to report that it was a bit of a flop! In the 28-some klenengan we’ve had, we’ve never had a flop yet, so I guess we’re doing pretty well! But this one, for some reason, had a very sleepy feeling to it, and pieces kept falling apart, musicians were passing blame around. It was just one of those evenings where a few key people were perhaps tired and cranky and it kind of spread! It didn’t help that Pak Wahyo had planned FOUR big and/or obscure gendhing to start (he usually plans at most 2-3). Then at 1:00 am Bp. Kuat/RRI decided to plan rebab for the first time at Laweyan, and chose to do Rimong, pl 7. The musicians were already in quite a mood, and to have Bp. Kuat play rebab on a kethuk 4 arang, somewhat obscure piece at 1:00 am—most didn’t find it amusing! Pak Mujiono on kendhang for Rimong, didn’t even sparkle or play around one bit. Last month, as reported, we had the best ever—this month the worst—that’s the way it is...

One new musician was in attendance—Bp. Legiyo—Pak Anom Soeroto’s very first gender player and currently plays gender for Bp. Warsino-Slenk.

Next month is the fasting month. The first year of the klenengan we went ahead with it during the fasting month (back when it was at Lojiwetan) but last year we took the month off, since Laweyan is such a strict Islamic neighborhood. The musicians, as a group, seemed to really want to have the klenengan next month, so we’ll be having it at Lojiwetan (Bp. Mulyadi’s house) for next month only. Then in December we’ll be back at Laweyan.
