Year 3, #9

Saturday, 24 April 2004
Laweyan, Solo

Dear Friends,

Last night we had the 9th klenengan of the 3rd fiscal year of the North-American-sponsored klenengan. It started at 8:00 pm and ended at 2:00 am. This klenengan had 2 distinct phases—quite serious and staid in feeling all the way through 11:30, then quite light and lively until 2 am. Usually things get a little lighter around 10 pm or so, but this month there was a longer list of gendhing pre-planned by Pak Wahyo and Pak Dalimin. However, Akira from Japan, who has been in Solo for over 2 years, was leaving to go home in the morning, so at 11:30 some “goodbye” jineman and langgam for him started. Also there was a special performance at SriWedari, which ended at 11:00, resulting in an influx of excited—a sponsor from Jakarta had given them all some extra pocket money—and slightly intoxicated wayang orang musicians. Mas Darsono “Jepang” also arrived around 10:30. (Need I say more...) Both parts of the klenengan were a success, with different musicians shining at different moments. Again, very typical of most klenengan, but particularly stark and sudden in contrast last night. Like the whole feeling just turned on a coin as Roning Gadhung ciblon was coming to an end.

We had a guest rebab player from Jakarta, Bp. Hartono. He is an old friend of both Pak Wakidjo’s (a former neighbor) and Pak Harjito’s (SMKI) from the 1960’s in Solo, and a regular in the group that rehearses at our house in Jakarta.

Ibu Tarini has been absent for 3 klenengan now—she finally had an operation to remove long-time cysts she’s had, and is still recovering in the hospital. Bu Tukinem is doing very well after her sinus operation, but not well enough to go out until 2 am and sing. There was a rehearsal at Bp. Bambang Suwarno’s house for a dhalang competition, so many of the younger musicians couldn’t attend. Sekaten starts tomorrow at the Kraton, and Pak Anom/Bayu were performing as well, so a few of the musicians were absent with those responsibilities.

The next klenengan will be on Saturday, 22 May at Laweyan.

Pak Dalimin had planned from Sembawa to go to Maskentar, using the ompak of ldr Sembawa for the ir 2 section, and going back to this ompak as well after wilet—but it wasn’t clear enough what everyone was trying to do and it wasn’t at all “kompak”. Some thought they were going to Ldr. Sembawa of course, and wanted to start bedhayan gerongan, and others of course thought they’d come out of Maskentar using the normal Maskentar/Subasiti balungan.)
