Year 3, #6

Dear Friends,

Last night we had the 6th klenengan of the 3rd fiscal year of our event. It started at 8:00 pm and ended a 2:10, and was packed full once again. The musicians had agreed last month to make this an evening of wayang accompaniment, and kept up that goal until about 11:00, when they switched to klenengan for sl 9, as many seemed to agree they needed some ciblon/rangkep, etc. (That was also when the sake arrived.) It was agreed that next month they will play klenengan pieces first and then return to wayang accompaniment with slendro sanga. In this particular klenengan there was a good amount of switching around instruments (in the klenengan section anyway), a very enthusiastic vocal section (both sindhen and gerong), the announcement to the musicians that mas Wakidi and I got married on January 2 in the USA, and free-flowing sake brought by Bp. Saptono—and the result—well, suffice it to say it wasn’t a sleepy klenengan!

We were very pleased to have a new sindhen this month—Ibu Dharti, recently retired teacher at STSI. Bu Dharti is RRI Bu Dharmi’s older sister. She has a very distinctive, interesting style and is quite knowledgeable about special garap. We hope she’ll become a regular.

There was a wayang happening in Kampung Sewu, which caused a conflict for some. The dhalang was a student of Bp. Ali’s and the musicians from Bp. Mulyadi’s Lojiwetan group, so Bp-s. Ali, Sular, Mardi, Karman, and Ibu-s Mulyani and Sumini were not in attendance. Bp. Kamso had an STSI meeting out of town. Bp. Darsono/Jepang, as usual, was at his Boyolali, Saturday night rehearsal.

Bp. Yadi came and played—this time without a crutch, very little swelling in his foot, and only a very slight limp. His spirits were high and he kept reminding me to say thanks to everyone who donated money for his leg operation. Three months later we can see that it was clearly a success.
