Year 9, #7

15 June 2010
Home of Ibu Cendhani Laras, Baluwarti, Surakarta

On Tuesday night, 15 June 2010 we had the seventh klenengan in the 9th fiscal year running. This klenengan was held in Baluwarti, near the Kraton in Solo, at the home of Ibu Cendhani Laras (mbak Mulyani). The first few gendhing were all planned by Bp. Yadi ahead of time.

The evening started out wonderfully, but ended quite abruptly. Dr. Rahayu Supanggah’s son, Mas Brontos, had been in and out of the hospital for six weeks, and two nights ago went into a coma. The musicians, knowing this, had just started to play a version of the gendhing Sidawaras (which means “becomes healthy again”) for him at 11:00, and Pak Panggah had just arrived home from the hospital, with the plan to mediatate from his home in Benawa while Pujangga Laras was playing Sidawaras in Baluwarti. As the musicians were playing and Pak Panggah was at home focusing his thoughts, he got the message that his son had passed away. Mas Raji, who was in Baluwarti, got the message on the phone and told the musicians to stop, right in the middle.

After about 30 minutes of sitting in shock and not playing at all, Pak Saptono finally took the reins and told everyone what we were going to do. He said to take a deep breath and play a bit more, something calm and thoughtful, and then once it was midnight to burn an offering and play a mulyararas for Pak Panggah’s son. Then he said we should all go straight over and pay our respects to Pak Panggah.

So that’s what we did—see gendhing below….

(The performers had planned Gd. Sidawaras in sléndro manyura, as an offering to mas Brontos to get well, but mas Saptono felt it wasn’t time for manyura yet, so suggested they try it in sléndro sanga and rename it “Jatiwaluya”---which means the same thing as Sidawaras—to get well again.)
