7 May 2010 On Friday night, 7 May 2010 we had the sixth klenengan in the 9th fiscal year running. This klenengan was held in Gebang, Kadipiro at the home of Ki Purbo Asmoro. The gendhing were initially planned by mas Wakidi, and then altered with a few requests by Pak Yadi. We’re struggling a bit with the format of Pujangga Laras, in terms of how the gendhing are planned and how the instrumentation is determined. At this klenengan, although Bp. Wito, Bp. Saptono, and Bp. Warsito (Pak Manteb’s boning player) were all there, the gender/rebab/kendhang/bonang personnel didn’t change for the first 2/3rds of the klenengan (the first four major pieces). People in general also seem to have a very good time, and enjoy seeing each other/don’t necessarily feel they have to play to be happy, however…. There’s only a certain amount that mas Wakidi and I can/should orchestrate, so we’re kind of just holding out for the next few klenengan. Then we hope to have a kind of a meeting in July when we hold the “beginning of the 10th year” klenengan, to reevaluate how people see the klenengan and how perhaps to reorganize it slightly if necessary. One thing I keep forgetting to mention, is that for about the past two years, Bp. Singgih has been video-taping every Pujangga Laras for the ISI library, with permission from the Pujangga Laras committee, and funded by ISI in terms of equipment.
