Home of Ibu Cendhani Laras, Baluwarti, Solo
Dear Friends,
Thanks to all who have sent in their generous contributions to the 2005-06 Pujangga Laras klenengan! If you haven't already please send yours in, as we have already held 3 klenengan this fiscal year—thanks!
Last Friday night we had the 3rd klenengan in the 5th fiscal year, now officially called "Klenengan Pujangga Laras". It took place in Baluwarti (Kraton neighborhood) at the home of Ibu Cendhani Laras (Bu Mulyani, sindhen) and Bp. Mulyadi (gamelan maker). The klenengan was the most full we have ever had—with 64 musicians/sindhen in attendance! It was a bit surprising actually, as we are about 10 days away from the fasting month and still in the midst a very busy wedding season. It may have something to do with the fact that the klenengan was on a Friday instead of Saturday night. On the other hand, it is also a sign of the times
We had a number of new musicians attend:
- Bp. Jumadi, rebab player and longtime teacher at SMKI
- Ibu Narti, retired RRI sindhen, currently at Mangkunegaran
- Ibu Kaeni, freelance sinden and wife of mas Karman who has been coming for years
- Ibu Tadhuk, sindhen at Mangkunegaran
The next klenengan will be on Saturday, 29 October, at the home of Ki Purbo Asmoro in Gebang, Mojosongo, and will fall during the fasting month. We've tried to schedule it twice now at his home, and have had to change plans because of wayang performances of his that have come up at the last minute, so we decided on the fasting month for the one at his home, since it definitely will be free of wayang.
We always hold 11 klenengan a year instead of 12, and give fasting month bonuses. The month "off" this year will be in December when mas Wakidi and I are in the USA.
