Eromoko, Wonogiri

Dear Friends,

Last night we had the 2nd klenengan in the 5th fiscal year, now officially called “Klenengan Pujangga Laras”. It took place in Eromoko, Wonogiri at the home of Midiyanto S. Putro. Midiyanto, as most of you know, has been teaching gamelan for over 15 years in the USA, and before that in New Zealand. I studied gender with him in Berekley 1989-1991, and he prepared me exceptionally well for my time in Solo which started November 1991—he’s a very talented teacher, as well as a great musician and dhalang.

The highlight of the evening for me was when Mas Midi’s award-winning children’s group played for an hour before the regular klenengan. They are so solid, confident, and full of enthusiasm. Midiyanto’s father, Ki Sutino Hardoko-Carito, his uncle Ki Suyati, a local gamelan teacher Bp. Tukidjo, a number of Ki Sutino’s musicians and family, and some Eromoko residents stayed all night to listen once the Solonese musicians started playing.

Eromoko is a village south of Wonogiri-proper, and about 1.5 hours from Solo. Musicians gathered at 5 pm at the Mangkunegaran to board buses, and didn’t get home until around 4 am, so we did give each musician a surprise extra Rp. 20,000 each at the end of the evening for the extra time and trek this klenengan involved. Since fewer musicians attended than usual, we had the extra to spend, and ended up spending Rp. 6,310,000 or $650 (Rp. 9700 = $1), of which Rp. 740,000 ($76) was in the Rp. 20,000 ($2) surprise bonuses.

Although the plan is to rotate the klenengan around, this will most likely be our only rotation to an area so far away—a onetime special event made possible by Bp. Midiyanto’s generosity—he supplied the food, neighborhood costs, waiters, etc so that we could spend extra money on transportation and small bonuses. Thanks mas Midi!!!

The next klenengan will be held Saturday, 1 October at the home of Ki Purbo Asmoro in Gebang, Mojosongo. (The August klenengan was quite early and therefore there will be 6 weeks between Klenengan #2 and #3.)

Klenengan #4 will be held in early November (probably the 1st or 2nd—the very end of the fasting month) in Benawa, and Klenengan #5 sometime in early December. Contact me if you need firmer details and are planning on visiting Solo.
