Year 7, #5

19 April 2008
Home of Bp. Rahayu Supanggah, Benawa, Palur

Dear Friends,

On Saturday night, 19 April 2008, we had the 5th klenengan in the 7th fiscal year running. It was held at the home of Dr. Rahayu Supanggah in Benawa. It started at about 8:00 pm and lasted until 2:00 am. Our fiscal years now start in September, so the 5 klenengan so far have been Sept 22, Nov 10, 18 January, 8 February and this last one. There will be 11 klenengan in the year, with no klenengan in the fasting month (October this year).

Since there was no klenengan in March, there will be two in April (the next one being 30 April, in just a week or so).

We were very happy to see Bp. Midiyanto attend the klenengan. As most of you must know by now, Bp. Midiyanto’s wife Hendrati tragically passed away quite suddenly from a brain aneuryism on March 7th. This was the first time he had been out of the house to do anything but take care of business or visit her grave with his their two sons Anggo and Tunjung.

Also in attendance was Ki Sayoko, a well-known dhalang figure from the Klathen community, who came with Bp. Wito.

This month Bp. Kamso requested that some of his students be allowed to perform two pieces from their recent exams. Before each piece Bp. Kamso gave some background to his thinking for choosing the pieces as exam material. Students doing their final exam (“TA” = Tugas Akir) at ISI go through the following process (this process changes from year to year):

  • Students taking the exam are placed in small clusters—usually only 2-3 to a cluster.
  • Their instructors choose a set of pieces for each cluster (one bedhayan, a few gendhing klenengan, and one wayang accompaniment piece) and an instructor is assigned to a cluster.
  • The cluster of students gathers friends, colleagues, and sometimes community players together to form a full gamelan group and they rehearse for weeks.
  • There are a series of exams and they are evaluated by a jury to instructors and special adjunct faculty (like Bp. Wakidjo, Bp. Yadi)—a lottery is conducted just before they go on stage and that is where they find out which klenengan piece of the many they will be tested on

At the klenengan two Bp. Kamso’s clusters performed—one doing Gd. Lanjar Ngirim and doing Gd. Lambangjiwa.

The next klenengan will be on Wednesday night, 30 April, in Benawa.
