Year 7, #2

10 November 2007
Home of Bp. Rahayu Supanggah, Benawa, Palur

Dear Friends,

On Saturday night, 10 November, we had the second klenengan in the SEVENTH fiscal year of the Pujangga Laras klenengan. It was held at the home of Dr. Rahayu Supanggah in Benawa. It started at about 8:30 pm and lasted until 2:30 am.

It was a really crazy week for many artists in Solo, as the Mangkunegaran was celebrating its 250th anniversary on Sunday 11 November in the pendhopo. There was a huge celebration on Sunday evening, 11 November, involving a number of dances accompanied by the standard Mangkunegaran karawitan (langendrian, panji topeng, bedhaya), a “kolosal” sendratari (standard karawitan group filled out by some key ISI musicians like Bp. Hadisoecipto), some compositions by an ISI group (led by Bp. Dedek), and as the finale, a wayang sandosa performed by Bp. Purbo Asmoro, Bp. Dwi, and Bp. Wardaya, with accompaniment by Bp. Bono and his student group from ISI, lakon “Tripama”.

These various groups took different and opposite positions in the yard and on the pendhopo and it was quite spectacular—we went to a few of the rehearsals. Tickets for Sunday night ran from Rp. 300,000 to Rp. 3,000,000 and were COMPLETELY sold out weeks ahead! Saturday night was meant to be free and a night of rest for the whole crew (hence many wanted Pujangga Laras scheduled for that night), but at the last minute the Mangkunegaran organizers insisted on another marathon rehearsal and in the end no one involved in the entire huge production was able to attend Pujangga Laras.

Surprisingly enough though, the klenengan was a huge success anyway, and very lively. Bp. Darsono “Jepang” really came into his own somehow and encouraged the musicians to keep playing until 2:30 am, when we often stop at 2:00. The klenengan had a nice, vibrant feel to it, despite the low attendance.

The next klenengan will probably be held 15 December, but location not yet determined. Ibu Yatmi has been asking us for months to have the klenengan in Boyolali at her house, and Bp. Tukimin (Mangkunegaran) wants us to come out to Ngadirojo, Wonogiri to his father’s house, and do a percobaan gamelan.

Sorry that I didn’t get the bawa titles once again. Every 3-4 months I remind Pak Panut that I need a list of the bawa at the end of the klenengan, for my report. And he remembers for about 2-3 klenengan, the forgets and I have to remind him again. Things are just too busy for me to have a chance at the end to search him out, and I guess there is one limit for me in the writing of this report—taking the time to listen to the recording and look up the bawa... sorry.
