Year 6, #10

Sekolah Menengah Karawitan Indonesia Surakarta

On Monday night, 30 July, we had the 10th klenengan in this sixth fiscal year of the Pujangga Laras klenengan at SMKI. SMKI (Sekolah Menengah Karawitan Indonesia) is the High School of Performing Arts in Solo, in the neighborhood of Kepatihan. It's still known as SMKI, although now officially called something else more generic, can't remember. It was a new space for us, but many had been suggesting we try it so.....

We had a rough start to the evening! We had organized the use of the SMKI theater space (the "gedhung"—not where Anggara Kasih is and not the pendhopo) a few weeks ahead. The outdoor pendhopo was not offerred to us, although that's where I really wanted it, because Pak RB said the sindhen would be "too cold from the wind". In fact there was an event already planned there—a grand final rehearsal for a student dhalang competition in Malang next week, being run by one of Pak Manteb's younger brothers. But when we got there it turned out that the competition also involved theater and dance groups all using taped music, which had been rehearsing in the theater all day and were still rehearsing.

We had 50-some musicians waiting outside under the trees in the parking lot in complete darkness. Finally after 15 minutes mas Mardi said—"hand out the notation and we'll all memorize Semburhadas together in preparation, come on." and everyone looked at him like he was insane because it was pitch black out. (Those who know mas Mardi won't find this a completely atypical reaction to his ideas....) Then Pak Yadi and Pak Dalimin led a kind of humming chorus of the Semburhadas lagu and corrected people as they went, so in the end that is in fact how they spent their waiting time....!

It was only at 9:00 pm we were finally able to move in, only to find there were no tabuh to be found. After many jokes about playing with no tabuh, or recording sindhenan/siteran/rebaban/sulingan only, etc etc and some running around by mas Raji, we found all the tabuh, and the klenengan was able to start and went to 2:00 am as usual.

In the meantime, although we did our best to post informants at all gateways and send out text messages to all with handphones, there were a few musicians who turned away and went home when they saw all the wayang activities and crowds around the pendhopo, thinking they had the wrong night. Hence a smaller crowd than usual......

(Ldr Subasiti in pl 7 is in fashion now and is referred to as Ldr. Rasamadu. I believe the title was given by Bp. Raji. There was a bit of confusion at the ompak as a number of musicians weren't sure where it was going, and often this leads to Ldr Longgor Lasem)
