On Monday night, 9 July, we had the 9th klenengan in this sixth fiscal year of the Pujangga Laras klenengan at Dr. Rahayu Supanggah’s home in Benawa. It started a bit late, at 8:20, and went until 2:00 am. It was the usual crowded and social atmosphere, and as usual for July, a LOT of foreign visitors able to attend.

There were two new musicians there—Bapak Sajuri and his son Hartono. Pak Sajuri was one of the original musicians with Ki Nartosabdo, and is one of the older Condhong Raos musicians still alive. He now sings for Ki Purbo Asmoro, as does his son.

    (This piece is getting a lot of airtime lately. It was played 2 weeks ago at the Friday evening siaran at the Mangkunegaran, then at this klenengan. Then in late July, a few weeks after this klenengan, Pak Mujiono wanted to try the Kepatihan pl 6, related but different, version at Anggara Kasih/SMKI. His request was misinterpreted by those who prepare the notation for that event though, and they prepared this piece, but with the instruction to play it in pelog nem. Pak Mujiono was so disappointed that he retreated to behind the gong and wouldn’t play rebab anymore, although he was the organizer of gendhing for the evening. Mas Wakidi has decided we’ll try the Kepatihan version, to please Pak Mujiono, at the next Pujangga Laras klenengan.)

    (Gd Pangesthi is a new piece written by Pak Dalimin, in his attempts to stay busy and positive while recovering from his stroke. When we went to see him to invite him to the klenengan, he showed us a scrap of paper under the table by the TV where he had scribbled down the notation, scratching parts out and retrying phrases. Mas Wakidi took it and wrote it out neatly, adding gerongan for the minggah ciblon, and assured Pak Dalimin we’d try it at the klenengan, which made him very happy. “Pangesthi, or strong will/focus/and determination, in this case referring to his strong will to get better, he told us. Never once at Pujangga Laras has Pak Wahyo come back to the rebab to play again after resting and letting someone else take over, but he did for this piece. I like to believe that was out of respect for Pak Dalimin and perhaps even a solidarity in terms of wanting to get better from their strokes, but I don’t know of course. Ldr Asih is by Pak Yadi and has been around for a number of years now and already played at many events.)

Budget

We spent Rp. 6,625,000 or $736 (Rp. 9000 = $1).

Our 10th klenengan will be in late July and our final, 11th klenengan this fiscal year in August. We are now starting each new year in September, as it is a better schedule for collecting new subscriptions.
