Year 4, #10

Rumah Bp. Supanggah, Benawa

Dear Friends,

On Saturday night we had the 10th klenengan in the 4th fiscal year of the “Laweyan” klenengan, which is now simply called klenengan “malam Minggu ke-tiga” (3rd Saturday of the month), and takes place in a variety of locations around Solo. There will be ONE more klenengan in this fiscal year, and in July we start our FIFTH year running! (Remember, we hold only 11 klenengan a year and the 12th is fasting month in which we have no klenengan but give bonuses for Lebaran.)

After having just stopped calling it the "Laweyan" klenengan since we moved, we may even have to stop calling the klenengan “malam minggu ke-tiga” now...

The Solo radio station (RRI) has revived an old tradition of having live wayang performances every 3rd Saturday of the month in their theater, and a few of the musicians that regularly come to the klenengan are RRI employees (Ibu Tarini, Bp-s Karno,Yasa, Hartono, Prapto, Sagimin) and asked us to consider a different regular evening. Each month will be a different dhalang at RRI, who will often bring a few of their own musicians which could also affect people in our klenengan. We will probably be setting the klenengan one month ahead from now on—one at a time—rather than having a set day, as there are so many factors to consider.

This was an unusual klenengan, in that the musicians decided last month to play gendhing written by klenengan participants (all within the past 5 years or so, and some quite recent)—it was an entire evening of new pieces, but all in a traditional Solo style such that you would never know the pieces didn’t come out of Bp. Mloyo’s notation book! It was an interesting evening and the musicians seemed to enjoy the break from the regular set-up. Between the wayang at RRI, pedhalangan exams at STSI, and a few other wayang (Bp. Anom in particular) a number of musicians were missing, but it was still quite full.

The next klenengan will be held Friday, 17 June at the home of Ibu Mulyani Cendhani Laras in Baluwarti.
