Laweyan, Solo

Dear Friends,

Last night we had the 1st klenengan in the 4th fiscal year of the North-American-sponsored klenengan. It started at 8:00 pm and ended at 2:00 am. It was an extremely lively one, particularly towards the end, in part due once again, to a variety of spirits brought in by various sectors. There was a fresh feeling as well—a renewed feeling—perhaps due to the dinner conversation at the last klenengan which I translated in my last report. A few of the comments I got from foreigners watching for the first time were, “Is it always this wild, spontaneous and animated?” and “Wow—the musicians really move around a lot and change positions.” Those were good perspectives to hear.

A number of musicians could not attend—there was a change of date and that might have led to some confusion—but it felt quite full at any rate.

Note: A gerong singer who has been coming for about a year, from the Mangkunegaran, we have listed for months as “Tukiman” or “Tukimin”. His name is, in fact “Sutimin”.

The next klenengan will be on Saturday night, 21 August at Laweyan.

For those interested in ciblon skema, Daludag is an interesting exercise in garap. It was played 3 times this month—here, Mangkunegaran, and Anggara Kasihan. It was also all the rage about a year ago when a hobbyist group from Telkom Bandung (made up of Solonese players who happen to be working in Bandung) played it for a siaran at RRI Solo. Each time the kendhangan becomes a point of discussion. The position of mentogan in the 3rd kenongan and not in the 1st and 2nd, is tied to the lagu but quite different from other mg kt 8 skema. Have a listen if you’re into ciblonanÉÉ

The 4 gendhing above were decided upon last month at the dinner meeting and notation was prepared and passed out to all by Mas Wakidi, at the request of the dinner meeting group. The rest of the klenengan was unplanned.

NEW “ENVELOPE” RATES:

As of this klenengan we have decided as an organizing committee, to raise some of the “envelope” rates. We haven’t raised them since July 2002, so it seemed due. The male musicians now receive 80,000 (up from 70,000), sindhen rates are staying the same (except for a few who were receiving the 70,000 male standard and they are also going up to 80,000), and the 7 “elders” of the klenengan (Bp-s Wahyo, Dalimin, Wakidjo, Yadi, Wakidi, Darsono “Jepang”, Saptono) are going up to 100,000. (However it’s important to note for accounting reasons that Bp. Saptono never accepts money and always insists his envelope be donated back to the fund. Bp. Darsono “Jepang” also very rarely accepts an envelope, usually leaving before they are handed out.)
