Laweyan, Solo
Dear Friends,
Last night we had the 2nd klenengan in the 4th fiscal year of the North-American-sponsored klenengan. It started at 8:00 pm and ended at 1:30 am. We had quite a varied group of foreign listeners—many visitors from all over in Solo at the moment. We also had a special guest appearance again by Mas Midiyanto—one of his last nights in Java before going to Berkeley, USA to teach—and this time he played rebab! Bp. Panggah was also able to attend for the first time in quite a while, and played kendhang.
It is, of course, the Independence Day celebration season, so a number of musicians were unable to attend as they were busy with those festivities. Independence Day falls on August 17th, and neighborhood celebrations tend to start the day after and go through the end of August. Bp. Anom Soeroto and Bp. Pahang were both performing in the Solo area and Bp. Purba Asmara in Magelan, so any musicians that normally follow those dhalang were not in attendance (Yatmi, Yayuk “Triagen”, Kesi, and Narto following Mas Purba; Dewi, Harjutri, Wito, Budi, and Hartono/RRI following Pak Anom and , Joko Sabar, Sutat, Warti and Sumini following Mas Pahang).
Ibu Parni was busy as her daughter Wulan was married earlier in the day. We were glad to see Ibu Tarini back after almost a year in absence with health problems.
