Year 2, #9

Saturday, 19 April 2003
Laweyan, Solo

Dear Friends,

Last Saturday night we had the NINTH klenengan of the 2nd fiscal year of the North American sponsored klenengan.

NOTE:There will only be ELEVEN klenengan this year, since they took the fasting month off. However in terms of the budget we would have paid for 12 klenengan, since after the fasting month we handed out the traditional double salary bonus. In other words in July, after 2 more klenengan, we'll be starting the third fiscal year. So be prepared, as we'll be sending out a new pledge plea very soon!

The klenengan started at 8:00 pm and lasted until a bit after 2:00 am. We had two new musicians--Ibu Dewi and Bp. Wito from Klathen, who play with Ki Anom Soeroto's wayang troupe. Ibu Yatmi came back for a second time, and she really helps to liven up the sindhen section, as she likes to do a lot of special senggakan and keplok, etc. when she's not singing. Pak Wahyo missed this month, as his family was getting ready for a wedding on Sunday. There had been brief talk last month of moving the klenengan to his house for the eve of the wedding, but he insisted there was not room (and it probably would have actually been a nusiance for his family, who wasn't planning for any entertainment of any kind). Bp. Ali, Bp. Karman, and Bp. Mujiono were playing in a wayang in Bp. Ali's neighborhood. Bp. Darsono "Jepang" was at a rehearsal in Boyolali that he said might turn out to be a regular impediment to his coming....

Everyone else was there and so the klenengan was quite lively and crowded and there was a large range of repertoire played. Also the largest foreign audience--I didn't know many of the listeners....The musicians seemed to be having a very good time. The only strange aspect was the limited number of people going up to play rebab. Usually we have at least 4 different rebab players and we only had 2. It wasn't for lack of qualified people--Bp-s Wakidjo, Panggah, Yadi, Dalimin, and Ngahana all stayed away from rebab, even when asked over and over! It could be that everyone was a bit confused as to how the void of Pak Wahyo not being there should best be filled. Also, there had just been a klenengan the night before at Bp. Panggah's and perhaps some felt they'd played enough there and didn't want to monopolize.....hard to say.
