Year 2, #8

Laweyan, Solo
Dear Friends,
Last Saturday night we had the 8th klenengan of the 2nd fiscal year in Laweyan, Solo. There were an extraordinary number of musicians in attendance. It being the Javanese month of Sura (the Javanese New Year--a month of village cleansing ceremonies but no weddings), hardly any musicians were missing. There was a student wayang at Mangkunegaran, so many of the PDMN players--Bp. Ali, Bp. Mudjiono, Ibu Munirah--were not there. Bp. Darsono/"Jepang" had an event to go to in Klathen. Everyone else was there, and we had 2 new musicians--both sindhen--Ibu Yatmi (formerly from Anom Soeroto and Warsino "Slenk"'s wayang groups, now singing with Bp. PurbaAsmara), and Ibu Sumini (Bp. Sular's wife). Bp. A.L. Suwardi also came for the first time, but unfortunately he didn't play--although many a time was half-way dragged up to the instruments by various other musicians, he kept saying he wanted to just listen.
The end of the klenengan was marred by an unfortunate event--at about 12:20, while everyone was eating, Mas Wakidi fainted from a standing position. He has very low blood pressure and has, on occasion, fainted like this before--when he comes to he's always out of breath, kind of hyperventilating. It's pretty scary. Luckily this time, (remember last time Jesse?) he warned me a split second ahead of time and I caught him. (Last time he ended up with a major concussion.....) He was fine after about an hour, but weak. For the rest of the klenengan he was a spectator from a chair in the back hallway, but he insisted the musicians not stop. he said it made him more relaxed to sit there for a bit and listen, rather than have them all leave ("biar saya dihibur.....")He's fine now. Thanks to Greg McCourt for all his support during that! As a result, I have no recording of the last section of the klenengan and didn't pay attention in the least to what they were playing. Kaoru has offerred to copy her recording for us, so I'll get the end spliced on to my MD's.......
