Laweyan, Solo

Dear Friends,

Last night we had the 5th klenengan of the 2nd fiscal year of our klenengan series. It started at 8:00 pm and went until 2:15 am. It was absolutely PACKED and a lot of fun for all. Of course last month we had a vacation for the fasting month (as did most other events) and everyone seemed happy to be back playing together.

We had a few new participants: Bp. Slamet, a young musician from SriWedari who directs a large number of hobby groups in town Bp. Hartono, a young gerong singer from the radio station Bp. Wardi, a 55-year-old musician from the Kraton, often plays kendhang there A young sindhen student from Bp. Ripto/RRIís groups

    Gb: Wakiyo

(The 2 pieces above were planned ahead of time by Pak Wahyo and generally announced a few days ago, but no notation prepared.)

For those interested: Before the piece began, there was debate as to whether to do the bonang imbal in the inggah of Mongkok Dhelik. Pak Dalimin said he didnít want toóhe says it belongs to Ela2 Kalibeber and is only borrowed for Mongkok Dhelik because the balungan is similar, but he feels itís for sanga and doesnít fit in Mongkok Dhelik. Pak Wahyo said he would have done it had he been playing bonang, but could see how it could go either way. Mas Yadi seemed to lean toward not doing it. I didnít get a chance to ask anyone else.)

    bn: Mardi
    gb: Wakiyo

(Pak Dalimin clearly wanted to play something elseóit seems he intended either Lipur Erang2 or Titpati pelog or something with a similar opening, but the balungan section basically took over completely at the end of the bawa and played the opening to Onang-Onang quite confidently and loudlyÖ..he was good-natured about it and only put the rebab down for a few seconds before joining in with a smile.)

  8. Ldr. Pangkur Tanjung Gunung, pl 7

    Rb: Yadi
    Gd: Narto
    Kd: Wakidi
    Bn: Mardi
    Gb: Tulus

(For those to whom this is new--this is a long Nartosabdo suite that starts with Ldr. Tanjung Gunung, then moves via a lancaran and andhegan into ìRasa Maduî (Pangkur ir 2 with a ngelik added to the ompak, with vokal chorus), and then into regular Pangkur pl 7 with rujakan and all the stops pulled out. It is very popular these days in Soloóin 2 months Iíve heard it played 5 times, not counting just regular rehearsals.)

(For those who want ALL the news: Rainer, Germany went back to Germany about 2 weeks ago. Weíre sure heíll be back someday, but no specific plans yet. Kaoru ìJepangî twisted her ankle in mid-October and hasnít been able to go anywhere lately. Itís mysteriously gotten worse and worse over the past 6 weeks rather than better. She had it x-rayed and nothingís broken. Sheís getting around her house with the support of a little stool now. Mas Wakidi and I went to see her yesterday and sheís in amazingly good spirits, but truly incapacitated. Anyone with any advice or knowledge on twisted and sprained ankles, feel free to send it my way and Iíll pass it on.)

Budget

It is traditional after the fasting month, for people to receive ìLebaranî bonuses from anyone they normally have a working relationship with. The founding committee for this klenengan decided to give Lebaran bonuses in this situation as well (especially since we took last month off and had that money available), so we spent about twice as muchóRp. 7,320,000ówhich at the banks this week was $831 ($1 = Rp. 8800). If we count this as $415 for November and $415 for December, it falls comfortably within out target (max of $500 per klenengan).
