Year 8, #8

23 June 2009
Home of Bp. Supanggah, Benawa, Palur

On Wednesday night, 23 June 2009, we had the 8th klenengan in the 8th fiscal year running.

This klenengan served also as an inauguration of Bp. Panggah’s newly acquired gamelan from Kudus, complete with penembung and the gender with all high 5’s. He has named it “Nyai Sekar Gambuh”, referring to the fact (he explained during the ceremony) that it so matches his sensibility, his tastes, and has come at just the right time in his life.

This gamelan is somewhere around 50 years old, and was formerly owned by a Chinese-Indonesian family. The rancakan are quite striking (“Chinese” in style) and the gamelan has a number of unusual features. The slendro slenthem is old style with pencong, but the pelog is like a modern slenthem. The kenong are HUGE! The demung and saron go up to high 5 like the gender.

There was a very large crowd, as Pak Panggah had invited many of his non-Pujangga Laras-regular friends to attend. He also supplied his own extra food in abundance, so the evening was full of guests and food to the hilt! Throughout the first few gendhing you can hear one of Pak Panggah’s birds calling and singing away, resembling the gerong senggakan in a bedhayan. It was quite amazing. I’m not sure if the bird was out in a more audible position on purpose for good luck during the percobaan, or if the bird just decided to celebrate and is normally quiet during Pujangga Laras.

The gendhing were chosen by Pak Panggah through the KOMPOSISI. Then the musicians themselves decided to play some of Pak Panggah’s favorites, such as Rebeng and Songgeng.

The gamelan that Bp. Supanggah also just recently purchased last March or so and was recently inaugurated as well, is now in storage in his home.
