Year 8, #1

22 November 2008
Home of Ki Purbo Asmoro in Gebang, Mojosongo

On Friday night, 22 November 2008, we had the first official klenengan in the 8th fiscal year running. It was held at the home of Ki Purbo Asmoro in Gebang, Mojosongo. My records for this klenengan are extremely incomplete, as I was in charge of a group from Jakarta that was touring Solo that weekend. I spent most of my time guiding the group’s listening through the klenengan, and realized at the end that I hadn’t taken many notes. Also, once again, apologies for not having the bawa noted. EVERY month I ask the gerongan section to take notes for me on bawa sung and they only remember about once every four klenengan, even with a form and a pen in front of them! It’s always WAY too busy at the end for me to ask them. I could spend 30 minutes or so looking them all up every time I write the report, but I’m afraid that right now that’s not an option either. We’re really going to try to get the bawa section to take more responsibility.

One thing we did do at this klenengan, as the first in the 8th year, was have a little ceremony in which Bp. Darsono ISI made a speech. We also passed out pamphlets that we had made, composed of the history of the klenengan from a variety of standpoints. Each musician received a pamphlet with their own color photo on it. The pamphlets cost Rp. 1,000,000, which we took from the klenengan fund. I attach the contents to this mail.

Bp. Kamso was scheduled to be the organizer of the gendhing, but he fell quite ill with the flu and was unable to come. The musicians therefore played somewhat spontaneously, only Bp. Wakidi had requested Gd Lokananta, as he felt it had been ages since it had been played.

Two firsts for Pujangga Laras in this suite: jineman Tatanya by Ki Nartosabdo and Sinom Grandhel using cengkok miring, the latter of which many musicians in the crowd kind of frowned upon, but Yayuk “SriWedari” has a lot of campursari and Sragenan experience—perhaps it’s from that arena.
