Year 12, #10

28 March 2014
Home of Ki Purbo Asmoro, Sanggar Seni Mayangkara, Gebang, Kadipiro, Surakarta

On Friday, 28 March 2014, we had the 10th klenèngan in the 12 year of Pujangga Laras. It was held at the home of Ki Purbo Asmoro, RT 01/RT 17, Gebang, Kadipiro, Solo and started at 8:15, finishing at 1:45. The gendhing were set by Bp Sumarsam, and there was a request that no notation be prepared, in order to give a try more of the feeling klenèngan used to have when everyone really listened to each other.

We are very sad to report that Bapak Wakidjo is ill, and has been in and out of the hospital. He went into intensive care the night before the klenèngan (27 March), with heart, lung, and blood sugar problems. As of this writing, he is still in intensive care (Saturday, 29 March), and we can only hope that he gets well soon. We really missed his presence. But we were thrilled to have Pak Wito back with us, healthy and strong! He has some continuing liver and gout issues—and reports memory issues as well—but is in general looking quite good.

We still face some challenges at Pujangga Laras:

  • we’d (Pak Wakidi and myself) the group to stop using Ayak Pamungkas for the closing, as we are so very tired of it—we need to remember to specifically request something else
  • we tend to have a lack of good sindhèn, although this was better last night
  • the non-smoking policy never caught on
  • we may change the schedule, as when we eat at midnight a lot of listeners tend to leave and then when the musicians come back they only play one more piece—maybe the dinner placement needs to be more balanced in the middle
  • there continue to be a LOT of talented players who never get to play in the frontline—last night a few examples: Bp Darsono “cilik”, Bp Ratno/Kartasura, Bp Wawan, Bp Darsono “édan”, and others
