Year 12, #8
8 November 2013 On Friday, 8 November 2013, we had the EIGHTH klenengan in the 12th year of Pujangga Laras. It was held at the home of Ki Purbo Asmoro, in Gebang. It started at 8:00 pm, and ended at 2:00 am. The pieces not set ahead of time, and totally spontaneous. Tonight was special, as we planned an activity during dinner in which we wanted to make a timeline of musicians passed. (See pictures attached.) Using my elementary school teacher training, I knew that for this group we needed a BIG chart, colorful paper to separate categories clearly, and lots of thick markers available. The committee had already prepared by jotting down the names of as many musicians as we could come up with, the rule was only that they all be already gone, passed away. We had already put those who were mainly considered to be rebab players on green paper, gender players on orange, kendhang players on blue, and gambang/bonang players on pink. Then we had gerong and pesindhen on pink as well, but in a separate “vocalists” section. Sometimes choosing a main instrument was hard, but surprisingly enough, the musicians that night all immediately agreed with our choices of category. Then that night during dinner, we asked the musicians to start placing the colored cards on the timeline according to approximate birthdate, and also give us any specifics they had about the neighborhood they were from and their main affiliations (Mangkunegaran, RRI Solo, Kraton, a dhalang, SriWedari, ASKI, SMKI, etc). It was very lively, a lot of discussion, a lot of nostalgia, a lot of debate. A LOT of new names added that we hadn’t had to start with.
