Year 13, #4
9 June 2015 Last night we had the 4th klenèngan in the 13th year of Pujangga Laras. It was held in the pendhapa at ISI Surakarta, as per every year, for the opening of their Founder’s Day month of activities. Three unusual things about it:
—Kitsie Emerson, Solo/Jakarta Acara GendhingLdr Wilujeng, pl barang Pathet “Maju” Beksan Bedhaya/Srimpi rb: Darsono “cilik” The vocal melody throughout is by Suraji, while the text comes from the listing “Bedhayan Pujangga Anom” in the book Serat Pesindhèn Bedhaya (ie, This book has a number of texts without melodies and the melodies have been lost as the pieces are no longer performed in living memory as bedhayan pieces—Suraji has been recreating some of the melodies over the years.) While the balungan to Pujangga Anom kt 2 kr mg 4 is standard for use in klenèngan, the balungan for the ladrang had to be reconstructed also by Suraji, based on the gendhing, the text, etc. Gd Manggalamudha kt 2 kr mg 4 kalj Ladrangan (piece by Martopangrawit), Pathet Onengan, pl barang rb: Darsono “cilik” Gd Karenan kt 4 kr mg 8 (piece by Suyadi) kalj Ldr Tebu Sauyun (Nartosabdo) rb: Saptono Gd Kagok Respati kt 2 kr mg 4 kalj Ldr Kagok Respati (piece by Prabuwinata) rb: Saptono (The “Ayak-ayakan Mijil Kethoprak” was new and the musicians got a little confused—it wasn’t meant to slow down again and go into rangkep, but simply stay in the wilet tempo, using ayak-ayakan form. The three palaran texts were chosen by Suraji and in the text booklet the singers received.) DINNER Students from ISI filled the dinner slot: Jineman Gendra (Martopangrawit) dados Ldr Kang Cumengkling dados Lnc Rampak Rempeg (RC Hardjosubroto), pl lima kd: Wahyu Thoyib (son of dhalang/Wonogiri Ki Widodo Wilis) (back to Pujangga Laras) Pathet Sanga Wantah rb: Uul (Mambaul Khasanah) (Pamadya, Uul, Erwanto just completed their final exam at ISI with this piece, under the direct direction of Sukamso and other teachers. The major point of this piece are the challenges in the vocal part: the inggah makes different uses of the text and lagu Ilir2 in various ways, with andhegan-s resembling Gd Kembang Gayam. The way they play Lindur in kébar in between the vocals was thought up by Sukamso.) Pathet Jugag rb: Wawan (A piece written by Bp Wakidjo when his wife was ill with cancer, as a wish for her release from the illness and then the ladrang when she got better, in thanks. I post here the andhegan, gérongan ngelik and gambyakan lyrics for those who know Javanese. It’s really incredible that Pak Wakidjo wrote this—so heartfelt and emotional.)
