Year 11, #5

6 July 2012
Home of Bp. Bambang Siswanto in Klaten (Kecamatan Trucuk, Desa Sabranglor, Dhukuh Kerten)

Last night, Friday, 6 July 2012, we had the FIFTH klenèngan in the 11th year running of Pujangga Laras. The klenèngan was held at the home of Bp. Bambang Siswanto in Klaten (Kecamatan Trucuk, Desa Sabranglor, Dhukuh Kerten). It began at 8:00 and ran through to 01:00 am (left a little early, as it was out in Klaten). This was partly in celebration of the circumcision of mas Bambang’s son, but also to “add to the bustle”, as the eve of the massive event in Klaten—110 dhalang performing in 11 (each venue 10 dhalang and their own full group of gamelan musicians) venues along the main drag of Klaten tomorrow evening.

The most striking aspect of this klenèngan was the incredibly appreciative response of the guests. Bambang Siswanto is from a large and auspicious family of musicians and dhalang, and a number were in attendance, commenting on how they enjoyed the klenèngan. It’s a little expensive to hold the klenèngan out of town, due to transport and slightly higher musician envelopes, but once in a while we’re thinking that it’s very much worth it. It seems that this Klaten crowd was quite hungry for really great klenèngan.

Another WONDERFUL aspect of the klenèngan was that Pak Yadi played bonang the entire time, and it was great—he seems to have his coordination back well enough after his stroke, to do both bonang and kendhang gendhing.
