Year 10, #7

28 June 2011
Home of Ki Purbo Asmoro, Gebang, Kadipiro, Solo

On Tuesday 28 June 2011, we had the seventh klenengan in the TENTH fiscal year of Klenèngan Pujangga Laras. It was held at the home of Ki Purbo Asmoro in Gebang, Kadipiro, Solo. It started at 8:00 pm and lasted through to 2:00 am.

Bp. Wakidjo planned the first three gendhing and then Rondhonsari, and in general created a gendhing list meant to send well wishes to his wife who continues to suffer from a long illness.

This was a really terrific and VERY full klenengan, particularly the guests. I think there were equally as many guests as musicians, maybe even more.

We started a new tradition this month, of playing some old recordings during dinner for the musicians to listen to and possibly comment on. We will only be able to do this if there happens to be a sound system and MP3 player, but the idea is to get as many comments as possible from musicians and to see their reaction. This month we played a recording of TALU Wayang Gedhog from the Kraton from 1968 (since they had just done this at the last klenengan). I thought this recording came from the Prof. Marty Hatch recordings, but it turns out I obtained it from Marc Perlman a few years ago.

Anyway, many of the musicians loved listening to it, and some of them ignored it, which is exactly what we expected! There was a group: Bp-s Darsono “Jepang”, Bambang Siswanto, Danis, Midiyanto, Darsono Hadirahardjo, Purbo Asmoro, Wakidjo, Wakidi, Bu Parni, and Bu Tugini, who were particularly glued to the recording and barely ate anything because they were so fascinated. After the recordning finished, Bu Parni told the story of being a new sindhen at the Kraton, only about 20 years old and about 3 years at the Kraton, and remembering the recording! She said that at the time there were two main sindhen at the Kraton with seniority—Bu Anggana Raras and Bu Semi. Bu Semi was her teacher, and it is very clearly Bu Anggana Raras on the recording she said. This is exactly the kind of information we dreamed of perhaps getting by putting these recordings on at dinner. I’ll get a copy of the recording to Barry, and we can make it available somehow so that when you eventually get the klenengan recording you can also access whatever we listen to at dinner.

NOTE: I’ve been meaning to mention that I always have a huge amount going on during these events, so there are inevitably mistakes in the reports—as I always rarely have time to listen to the recordings before I give them to the committee. So if you’re listening to the recordings and notice mistakes or omissions in the reports, please send the corrections to Chris Miller, as he is in charge of the reports of the website. Thanks!

Gd. Mintasih kt 4 kr mg 8 kalj Ldr Karansih, suwuk, lagu Sandhang Pangan (by Ciptasuwarso) dados Srepeg Tunggal Jiwa mawi palaran Kinanthi (Budi and Yayuk SriWedari), pl barang

(new gendhing and ladrang, written by Bp. Wakidjo for his wife who is ill, mintasih a contraction of minta asih , to ask for empathy and caring, and karnansih a contraction of karenan asih, referring to a light and happy heart)

This was a VERY nice piece I thought, and in some ways could be called a “gendhing kendhang”, in that Pak Wakidjo designed little fragments of special lagu requiring special kendhangan in the ciblon inggah before the andhegan. The ladrang also has grampyakan—special ciblonan in a regular irama II ladrang. The text of the ladrang is by Bp. Kamso, reflecting on how to stay positive when you have a serious illness (like Pak. Wakidjo’s wife does, and like the scare Bp. Kamso himself just went through). Tunggal Jiwa is a Srepeg (balungan and lagu) written by Bp. Wakidjo in the 1980’s when he was at RRI. He wrote it as an alternative to Srepeg Mataraman for use in kethoprak, and RRI Solo used it in kethoprak as long as he was at RRI.
